About

Dr. David G. Hebert holds a permanent position as full Professor of Music at the Grieg Academy, Bergen University College, Norway. In Bergen, he teaches postgraduate seminars in Research Methods, Psychology of Music, and Philosophy of Music Education, as well as Modern Music History and applied trumpet lessons. He has also been appointed Project Manager for the interdisciplinary cross-national research project “Understanding Talent: Best Practice in Talent and Performance Development” with the Center for Arts, Culture, and Communication. Professor Hebert continues long-term music projects with several research partners, such as Dr. Marja Heimonen (Sibelius Academy, Finland), Prof. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel (University of Munich, Germany), Dr. Alex Ruthmann (University of Massachusetts, USA), and Dr. Eva Saether (Malmo Academy, Lund University, Sweden). He has also consulted for the Royal Academy of Music, Denmark, advising their e-portfolio system (for student assessment and professional development) as well as the Glomus Network for Higher Music Education and its Master of Global Music program for which he was a founding Academic Coordinator.

Professor Hebert's background includes academic positions with universities on four continents (in Norway, Russia, the USA, Finland, Denmark, Japan, and New Zealand); and he has directed – or continues to direct – music research projects on six continents (in Japan, the USA, Finland, New Zealand, Ghana, and Guyana). He previously worked as a Professor of Music at the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki, Finland, where in affiliation with the departments of music education, folk music, jazz studies, and music technology, he directed doctoral dissertations and taught research methods seminars (e.g. Fieldwork Research, Music and Social Theory).

Professor Hebert has recently published a book entitled Wind Bands and Cultural Identity in Japanese Schools (Springer press, 2012) and has completed a co-edited book with Alexandra Kertz-Welzel entitled Patriotism and Nationalism in Music Education (Ashgate press, 2012, forthcoming/in press). He was a 2009 Visiting Research Scholar with Nichibunken (Kyoto), a division of Japan's National Institutes of the Humanities. Professor Hebert has mentored several music doctoral students to completion of their degrees (at Sibelius Academy and Boston University), and has received grants from several state governments for music projects. A specialist in historical ethnomusicology, sociomusicology, and intercultural music education, he has contributed to chapters in 10 books (besides the two mentioned above), and authored articles in 20 different refereed journals. His work is cited in over 100 publications by other scholars. Lectures and professional activities took him to 11 countries in 2009, 8 countries in 2010, and 7 in 2011. Recent writings appear in Southern Journal of Music Education (in press, 2011), Cultural Translations: Research on Japanese Literature in Northern Europe, Sociology and Music Education, Music Education for Changing Times, De-Canonizing Music History, Music of Japan Today, Parlando, Multicultural Perspectives in Music Education (vol. 1 & 2), Visions of Research in Music Education, Finnish Journal of Music Education, Journal of Music and Meaning, and Oxford Handbook of Music Education (in press). He serves in editorial roles for several professional journals: Journal of Music and Meaning, New Zealand Journal of Research in Performing Arts and Education, Research and Issues in Music Education, Finnish Journal of Music Education, and International Journal of Education and the Arts. He is also Chair of the Historical Ethnomusicology special interest group of the international organization Society for Ethnomusicology (2009-2011), and a member of the Nordic music informatics research group NNIMIPA.
